Friday August 16 Brockvile to Cornwall

Another glorious day for cycling. Jan and I were joined by Ken as we started out at 7 AM in cool temps, sunny skies and no wind.  Perfect day.

We continued along highway 2 which runs along the St. Lawrence river, and were treated to fresh cinnamon rolls, warm boiled eggs and coffee by pastor Jack and his wife.  What a treat.  Further down the road we were treated by Calvin CRC from Ottawa, then later Dixon Corners and Williamsburg churches.  We also saw lots of Jake Kuipers family greeting him along the way and encouraging him on his journey. What a welcome we had.
Pastor Jack and his wife serving fresh coffee and cinnamon rolls. Um

Gayla Postma and Nancy Dejong wife of farmer John a 2005 cyclists greeting us.

We continue along route 2 to Cornwall and had an option to take a parkway which we did and enjoyed a quiet road going past lakes and along the river.
We also had an option to take a bike path which ran along route 2. As traffic is not always friendly to cyclists we opted to take it and biked through an old village park which delighted us.

As cyclists many of us are experiencing close calls with drivers who do not like cyclists and seem to want us off the road. I have had cars come very close to me even when they have lots of room to move over into the other lane to pass.  We appreciate drivers who slow down when they pass us if there is oncoming traffic.  We appreciate drivers especially truck drivers who move over to the other lane to pass us so they do not whip us off the road by their draft.  We also appreciate drivers waiting till it is safe to pass on hills and curves.  Today we had drivers pass on a curve when there was oncoming traffic forcing oncoming traffic off the road.  I do not understand why people do this as they would not do this if we were in a car.  We have had more people in the last couple of days show disrespect to us a cyclists and it worries us. We continue to pray for safety each day.

Tonight we are staying in what we think is a pretty nice place the NAV Centre in Cornwall. It use to be owned by Transport Canada but in the 90's the Canadian government downsized and spun off many organizations or terminated 40,000 employees of which I was one.  The Nav Centre was the training centre for air traffic controllers and other staff and now seems to be a hotel.
We have great internet connections and everyone is getting caught up on their emails and postings.

Please continue to pray for the success of the tour, our safety.

As you pass through Staten Island, you will go by three walk-in centre locations used by World Renew two weeks ago for Hurricane Sandy needs assessment.

They are at Midland and Colony Ave., the Warehouse, about two blocks further along on Midland and Aimin's Tent, about three blocks from Colony, all on the right-hand side as you use the bike lane on Midland.

Cheers!
