August 14th Trenton to Kingston 72 miles

 

 

 

Woke up early this morning as I had sweep duty and had to help set up for breakfast at 6 AM.  Jan and I managed to get started by 645 in 58 degrees temperatures.  It was a cool ride to start with overcast skies.  We were soon joined by Dave, Russ and Nancy who started to pull us along until Russ got a flat tire and Jan and I carried on expecting they would catch up.  They did not need our help to change the tire. 

At mile 28 we were again served a spread by Bloomfield CRC. Again great hospitality and food.  Thanks so much. Jan and I then carried on and decided to go up to Lake on the Mountain which is a lake about 100 feet above Bay of Quinte and Lake Ontario.  We got a great view of the bays.  There is a mystery to how the lake may have come to be up at this level, but it is speculation and remains a wonder in God’s creation.

Today we had to take a ferry and crossed over to Aldoulphustown.   It was a small ferry but could carry tractor trailers and both of our semi’s were able to go on at the same time.  The scenery along the ride was again enjoyable. We had great roads and awesome scenery. God’s creation continues to be a real joy to cycle through.  We did have some side winds which made us work a little harder even when we have flat roads.  The miles went by  quickly because we had gorgeous views of the water along our route. 

 

 

We arrived in camp at about 1:15 and were able to set up camp take a shower and get to Tim Hortons to post blogs. A good afternoon.  The campsite we are staying at is the same one we stayed at in 2005.

Dave Geerlings challenged all riders to see if they could ride today in one gear.  There were over 10 cyclists that rode in one gear to remind ourselves that poor do not have many choices being in poverty, they do not have many resources or options.  I did not participate as I knew I would have some challenges with hills and constantly need to shift. 

My memory of this is the day Elizabeth Woudstra came to visit us in her wheelchaire and shared her journey with us at our peloton meeting. She was supposed to join us in Guelph in 2005, but was hit by a truck and was paralyzed in her legs. All the cyclists had lined up along the sidewalk to say goodbye and everyone of us had tears in our eyes as we all well knew this could have been anyone of us. She was very inspirational to us all and encouraged us in our tour. Blessings to Elizabeth and hope she is doing well.

Tonight we shared supper with members from 1st CRC and Westside CRC here in Kingston.  They provided a vast array of salads and desserts. Another feast by which we are all blessed. I reconnected to old friends Leo and Irene Jonker and Ed VanderMeer.  It was delightful to share stories and catch up on how all our off spring are doing.
